Grant Announcement: Flawless Post-Film Screening Speaker with the JCC Gordon Center

On Thursday, April 30 at 7:00pm, as a part of the 2020 Baltimore Jewish Film Festival, the Gordon Center will screen the 2019 Israeli film, Flawless, directed by Tal Granit and Sharon Maymon. This film features a transgender girl as the protagonist and explores her experience as well as other layered social issues. The film, which the selection committee found deeply moving, has received numerous accolades, including several Ophirs (Israel Film Academy Awards) and a best actress nomination for transgender lead Stav Strashko.

This application is to fund expanded programming that will deeply engage the audience in discussion about the film’s themes, encouraging audience members to challenge their own preconceptions. Post-show programming will include guest speaker, author/activist Abby Stein (Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman), who can share some specifically Jewish perspectives, and/or a panel that includes transpeople, parents of transyouth, and professionals who work to support transyouth. Because film festival audiences tend to skew older (70+), the film and discussion represent an opportunity to build bridges with members of the Jewish community for whom this topic may be new territory. As the film selection committee mirrors the audience demographic, we feel confident that the film will be an effective conversation starter.

Film Synopsis: Soon after enrolling in a new school, 17-year old Eden discovers that her two new best friends are planning to sell their kidneys to pay for cosmetic surgery and prom dresses. She is recruited to join them on their journey in hopes of achieving the body of her dreams. Things don’t go as planned, and when Eden’s secret is revealed, they must all come to terms with their prejudices and who they really want to be.
